What Is Periodontal Disease?
In this video, Dr. Robert Harvey discusses the serious nature of periodontal disease and emphasizes the importance of diligent oral hygiene.
I’m Dr. Bob Harvey from Aspire Dental Group. Many people often inquire about periodontal disease and its implications. Periodontal disease is particularly alarming to me, largely because it is often driven by genetics. Individuals may inherit genes that predispose them to this condition.
Periodontal disease involves the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth, which can damage the bone and gum support surrounding the teeth. There are thousands of types of bacteria in the mouth, but the ones associated with periodontal disease specifically target and can destroy the structural support of the teeth. This makes the disease very serious.
To manage and prevent the progression of periodontal disease, it’s crucial to maintain diligent oral hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing are essential, especially if you have a genetic predisposition to this disease. Without proper care, there is a real risk of losing your teeth. Remember, if you take good care of your oral health, you have a better chance of keeping your teeth for life. This underscores the importance of good oral hygiene practices.
