Dealing with shifting or floating dentures can be distressing and uncomfortable. This common issue with traditional dentures often leads to a sense of unease during everyday activities like eating or speaking. If you’ve experienced the frustration of ill-fitting dentures, you’re not alone. Studies across numerous countries estimate that 19% of people wear dentures, and many are grappling with this very challenge. Fortunately, there’s a groundbreaking solution that can make these challenges a distant memory!

Stabilize Floating Dentures With Mini Dental Implants

Floating Dentures in Lake City, FL | Mini Dental ImplantsThe key to stabilizing your floating dentures is attaching them to a sturdy base. That’s where mini dental implants come in. Mini implants are narrow titanium posts that are implanted directly into the jawbone. They act as artificial tooth roots, anchoring various dental restorations firmly.

The problem with floating dentures isn’t with the denture; it’s with what’s missing beneath. Our natural tooth roots play a pivotal role in holding our teeth (or teeth replacements) in place and stimulating the jawbone. Without these roots, the bone weakens over time. The result? Floating dentures that can’t sit still and a facial structure that suffers from bone and tissue loss.

A main cause of the floating denture problem is the absence of natural tooth roots. Our natural tooth roots are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the jawbone. Unfortunately, when you lose your teeth, the roots can no longer stimulate the jawbone to keep it healthy. As a result, the jawbone begins to recede, changing the shape of your oral cavity. This means dentures that once fit properly will feel loose or “float” in the mouth.

Dental Implants: A Solution for Floating Dentures

Implant dentures are a solution for floating dentures that connect your dental prosthetic to dental implants. The implants offer more security than your gumridge or denture adhesive can provide.

There are a few different options for implant dentures, each with unique attributes.

Implant-Retained Overdentures

Sometimes called “snap-on” dentures, overdentures connect to 4-8 mini implants and are removable at home for daily cleaning. This system uses the same materials as traditional dentures, but the acrylic doesn’t cover the palate, allowing you to taste all your favorite foods.

If the right conditions are met, pre-existing dentures can be converted into overdentures. However, Dr. Harvey or Dr. McNair will need to examine your dentures to determine whether they can be made to fit over the mini implants.

Semi-Removable Roundhouse Bridge (Fix-on-Six®)

This full arch bridge connects to 6-10 mini implants, offering enhanced stability. Don’t let the word “bridge” fool you; this roundhouse bridge replaces all your teeth on the top or bottom arch. It’s considered semi-removable because only Dr. Harvey or Dr. McNair will remove it at your regular cleanings. You may hear this option called Fix-on-Six®. This system is an alternative to the All-on-4® method that uses large conventional dental implants.

Non-Removable Roundhouse Bridge

This is the premier option for denture stability. Like the Fix-on-Six option, this system uses a zirconia roundhouse bridge on top of mini dental implants. However, the bridge is firmly cemented onto 10-12 mini implants. As a result, you can expect a non-removable roundhouse bridge to most closely mimic the feel and function of natural teeth.

The Magic of Mini Implants

Mini dental implants are a remarkable option for tooth replacement. Their slim profile and single-piece design make them much easier to place than conventional implants. And, with local anesthesia, the procedure is virtually pain-free. Thanks to the minimally invasive procedure, patients typically recover quickly, usually in just a couple of days.

These small-diameter implants can also be placed swiftly, often allowing patients to leave with new teeth in as little as one visit. Additionally, their simplicity translates to a more affordable option than traditional implants.
