What Is a Dental Bridge?

In this video, Dr. Rameek McNair details the process of placing a traditional dental bridge, from preparation to the final placement.

A traditional dental bridge consists of multiple crowns connected to each other, designed to replace one or more missing teeth. It utilizes the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth for support. For example, if you have a tooth at the back, followed by a missing tooth, and then another tooth, we would prepare both the tooth in front of and behind the missing space. These teeth serve as anchors for the bridge, which typically includes three crowns linked together to replace the missing tooth in the middle.

The procedure for placing a traditional bridge is similar to that for a single crown. We start by reshaping and contouring the anchor teeth to ensure a proper fit for the bridge. Next, we take an impression of the prepared area, which is sent to a lab where your permanent bridge is fabricated. In the meantime, we fit a temporary crown or bridge to protect the prepared teeth and maintain the aesthetics and functionality of your smile.

Once your permanent bridge is ready, you’ll return to our office. We will remove the temporary and replace it with the permanent bridge, ensuring a comfortable fit and restoring your smile fully. This process not only improves the appearance of your teeth but also restores your ability to chew and speak more effectively.
